The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) will authorize onsite sports betting at Detroit's three casinos at 1 p.m. March 11.

“With just 11 weeks to prepare, MGCB staff worked hard to make the launch of onsite sports betting at the Detroit casinos possible by March  Madness,” Richard S. Kalm, MGCB executive director, told WILX. “The casinos and their suppliers helped us by their timely efforts to share information we needed to authorize the gaming. This new gaming opportunity has been highly anticipated, and we hope citizens will enjoy it and see benefits from additional revenue to both the state of  Michigan and the city of Detroit.”

Michigan's legislature legalized sports betting and online gambling late last year. The enterprise is expected to generate $10 billion in wagers this year, according to Click on Detroit.

Participants must be 21 or older to place a wager on sports, either in person or online. According to the MGCB, the Lawful Sports Betting Act authorizes it to approve wagering on any amateur or professional athletic event or other event not prohibited by state or federal law. However, youth or high school athletic events are prohibited.

For Detroit casinos, taxes are allocated as such: 30% to the city of Detroit, 5% to the Michigan Agriculture Equine Industry Development Fund and 65% to the state's Internet Sports Betting Fund or Internet Gaming Fund, according to House Fiscal Agency. Some of the money collected for the Internet Sports Gaming Fund and Internet Gaming Fund will be used for MGCB funding, the Compulsive Gaming Prevention Fund, the First Responder Presumed Coverage Fund and the State School Aid Fund, also listed on the Michigan Legislature's website.

Tribal casinos are regulated by the federal government and will individually announce when onsite sports betting will be available.

More information about onsite sports betting can be found at the Michigan Gaming Control Board's website. If you need assistance with a gambling problem, please call the Michigan Problem Gambling Helpline at 800-270-7117.
